Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko announced that roaming between the two countries will be canceled by the end of 2024.
“We plan, as instructed by the presidents [of Russia and Belarus], to accomplish this by the end of the year,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.
Russian operators are already ready for the cancellation. The negotiation process with Belarusian telecom companies providing communication services is in the final phase.
Currently, when crossing the Belarusian border, Russians automatically activate mobile roaming, allowing them to use their phone outside their home network.
However, the rates for such services are high. One operator charges 65 rubles per minute for calls, while another charges 45 rubles. Using the internet costs 450 rubles per day, but traffic is limited.
Thus, the prices for communication services when traveling in the Union State (Russia and Belarus) are the same as when traveling in Europe, Africa, etc.
Work on canceling roaming between the two countries has been ongoing since 2017. When this happens, mobile communication for all subscribers in Russia and Belarus will be fully provided in home network mode.
This new measure will simplify travel for Russian citizens to the neighboring state and allow for savings.
Additionally, the issue of canceling roaming is key for business. Trade turnover between the two countries increased by 42% in the first quarter of 2024, and they aim to increase it further by the end of the year. The cancellation of roaming will contribute to this.
