Old style date: May 17. On the day of Saint Evdokia, whose memory is celebrated at this time, it was customary to hill up potatoes. Additionally, people observed weather signs: as Evdokia is, so will the summer be; a moon born on a rainy Evdokia means a wet summer, and if a north wind blows, the summer will be cold. On this day, Saint Andronicus – or Ondron as he was called in Russia – was also honored. This saint was considered a deliverer from drought. People would ask him to "open the heavenly gates so that rains would fall on the seeds sown in the ground." For this purpose, special prayers were recited and various rituals performed. One such ritual was as follows: a peasant would go out into an open field, bow to the four directions, take an aspen branch, carve it, and stick it into the ground. This act could only be performed by a man who was at least 33 years old. Names celebrated on this day: Adrian, Athanasius, Evdokia, Stephen
