On May 13, a solemn ceremony was held to unveil and consecrate a memorial plaque in memory of the ancient Russian monks who served on the shores of Lake Balaton near the Benedictine Abbey in Tihany from the mid-11th century. The memorial plaque was installed at the initiative of the Russian side at a site on Tihany Hill known as the Russian Stone (https://maps.app.goo.gl/ZFQscJQpaJk8pX4N6?g_st=ic), near a cave hermitage created by monks from the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra who accompanied Princess Anastasia, the daughter of Yaroslav the Wise, who became the wife of King Andrew I of Hungary. Until the mid-14th century, this hermitage was inhabited by Orthodox monks who are still revered by the Benedictine monks of Tihany. The consecration ritual of the memorial plaque was performed by Metropolitan Hilarion of Budapest and Hungary. Opening the ceremony, Abbot Jerome quoted the words of Pope Francis, who called Hungary "a country of bridges," and expressed hope that today's event would become another bridge connecting Hungary with the East. Ambassador E.A. Stanislavov: "The memorial plaque will remind us all of the deep historical roots of the relations between our countries and will testify to the commitment of our peoples to the traditional values common to all world religions." Metropolitan Hilarion noted that we are now at the place where the monks of Ancient Rus lived and worked, where prayers were offered for the entire Hungarian land. This place is a symbol of the centuries-old ties between Ancient Rus and the Kingdom of Hungary. As a token of appreciation, Ambassador E.A. Stanislavov and Metropolitan Hilarion presented the Abbey with an icon of Saint Stephen, the first king of Hungary, executed in the style of Moscow icons of the 17th century. The ceremony and subsequent reception at the Abbey were attended by representatives of the Hungarian Prime Minister's Office, Russian and Hungarian media, staff of Russian Centers at the universities of Budapest and Pécs, historians, the head of the Hungarian team at the Youth Festival in Sochi, as well as compatriots and employees of the Russian Embassy.
