Moldovan law enforcement agencies promise to punish residents if they want to celebrate Victory Day by wearing the St. George ribbon, reports RIA Novosti. According to the head of Moldova’s police, Viorel Cernautescu, people will be fined.
Ahead of the holiday, the Constitutional Court of Moldova ruled the ban on the St. George ribbon legal. However, the court also ruled that it is permissible to punish for its use, as well as the symbols V and Z, if they are used to justify or glorify military aggression, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. The police must prove the latter.
As reported by "Russian World," demonstrating the St. George ribbon and symbols Z and V in Moldova can result in fines ranging from two hundred fifty to five hundred dollars. For legal entities, the fine amount is multiplied several times.
Last year, a court in Moldova overturned the punishment for wearing the St. George ribbon on Victory Day. Moldovan parliament member Eduard Smirnov appealed the fine issued to him in 2022. He stated that the St. George ribbon is a well-known symbol of the memory of the victory over Nazism in the Great Patriotic War and that he used it in this capacity.
In 2023, many participants in events dedicated to Victory Day, including former Moldovan President Igor Dodon, wore St. George ribbons, banned in the country since 2022. The police department reported one hundred eighty cases of wearing the ribbon, including sixteen officials. Police drafted fifteen protocols on the spot.
