Old Style Date: May 23. Saint Leontius, whose memory is commemorated on this day, lived in the 12th century and was the bishop of Rostov and Suzdal. Leontius was well-educated and well-read, and from a young age, he felt drawn to monastic life. For further education, he went to Constantinople, where he took monastic vows. After returning from Constantinople, Leontius was ordained as a bishop. In Rostov, he fought for the Christian faith but met significant resistance. There are different accounts of Leontius's death: according to one version, he died peacefully, according to another — he was killed by a crowd of pagans. On Levon (Leontius) it was customary to plant cucumbers. Attention was paid to signs: if many horseflies appeared, it foretold a good vegetable harvest. This day was also called hemp day, as in many places, hemp was sown on Levon. A Paschal egg was usually placed in the seeds prepared for sowing, and the shells were scattered across the field during sowing. People would say: "Grow, God, white hemp, like an egg." Hemp was revered by the people as an extremely useful plant: hemp fiber was obtained from its stem, oil was made from its seeds, and they were used in folk medicine. It was said: "Whoever has hemp has double money"; "Sow hemp and look at the rowan tree — if the flowers are round, the hemp will be long."
