Old style date: June 1.
On this day, the Orthodox Church honors Saint Justin the Philosopher (also known as Justin the Great, Justin of Rome) — an early Christian martyr. He was the first to introduce the concepts of Greek philosophy to the Christian religion and initiated the theological interpretation of history. Justin was martyred while preaching the Holy Scriptures in Rome.
In Russia, on Ustin's day (Justin's day), people carefully observed the sunrise. If the sky was clear and the rays illuminated the fields without obstruction, it was believed that the rye would grow thick and ripe: "A red morning on Ustin — the rye will blossom red." If the morning happened to be rainy, it was also considered a good omen, as it predicted a good harvest of flax and hemp. However, it was not advisable to build a fence on this day, as it could lead to a fire. "On Ustin, don’t build a fence," warned knowledgeable people.
Girls had their own rituals for this day. If a beauty wanted to get rid of an unwanted suitor, she would break off a willow branch and stick it between her and his footprints. However, it was essential to spend the evening of this day with a beloved person — then family happiness would follow.
