A new professional holiday — Mathematician's Day in Russia — will be celebrated in winter. The establishment of this day in the calendar was ordered by the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, Mikhail Mishustin. The proposed date for the holiday is December 1st. On this day in 1792, the eminent Russian mathematician Nikolai Ivanovich Lobachevsky was born. The Ministry of Education of Russia is tasked to formalize the decision with the necessary regulatory act within two months. The initiative to establish this holiday was proposed to the Government by the rector of Lomonosov Moscow State University, Victor Sadovnichiy. This proposal was first made during the All-Russian Congress of Mathematics Teachers and Professors, which took place at Moscow State University in November 2023.
