Old style date: April 24.
Several saints named Eusebius are mentioned in the Christian calendar. The most well-known among them are Eusebius the Martyr, who lived in the 1st century; Eusebius of Nicomedia, executed by Emperor Diocletian at the beginning of the 4th century; and Eusebius the Hermit, who became a hermit in the 4th century.
It was believed that on Eusebius' day, everyone feels weighed down to the earth, and fatigue clings to people. To rid themselves of this affliction, people would pray and wash with holy water.
By this day, the sowing of oats needed to be completed - hence the nickname for Eusebius' day. It was said of this cereal: "Oats love to be sown even in water, but on time," meaning that oats needed to be sown strictly at a certain time, regardless of the weather or soil condition. There were also specific signs. Sowing oats could begin when birches start to blossom, when winged ants appear, or when fluff starts flying from willow trees. These signs were also used to predict the upcoming harvest; a good omen was considered if many mosquitoes appeared on Eusebius' day.
Even if the weather was good at the beginning of May, peasants would not rush to rejoice. They knew that after Eusebius' day, there could still be 12 more days of frost.
