Date in the old style: May 24. In Russia, the Svoborino tree referred to the rosehip. From this day, according to popular belief, the true summer began. They used to say: "The rosehip blooms - the blush of the year begins." In Russia, the rosehip was a symbol of youth, beauty, and love. There was a legend about its origin: a beautiful young Cossack girl fell in love with a boy, but the village ataman, seduced by her beauty, kidnapped the girl and sent her fiancé to war. The captive girl managed to escape to the forest; there she took her own life, and a bush with delicately fragrant pink flowers grew on her grave. Once, the ataman saw this bush and decided to break off a branch with beautiful flowers, but it immediately covered with sharp thorns and scratched his hand to blood. It was customary for people to come to the rosehip bush to relieve sorrow and calm the soul. When the rosehip was just beginning to bloom, grandmothers would sit under it with their grandchildren and tell them fairy tales. It was believed that this helped children to get rid of fears. The medicinal properties of the rosehip were also highly valued. Petals were used to heal wounds, honey made from the flowers was used to cleanse the blood, and a decoction was used to treat colds. Girls knew that if they washed their faces with water infused with rosehip flowers, their skin would become radiant. During these days, the so-called summer or green holidays began. It was customary to decorate houses with greenery and to weave wreaths on birches. People observed signs: if it rained during this period, there would be many mushrooms.
