During a live broadcast, the mayor of the capital of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (YNAO – Yamalia), Salehard, Alexey Titovsky, announced that in 2025, Salehard will celebrate its 430th anniversary. City Day will be celebrated on September 13, and two historic sites are set to be restored for the occasion – the Obdorsk fortress and the permafrostnik, a natural refrigerator believed to have been built in the 1930s for the needs of a fish cannery. However, with modern technology advancements, its necessity faded. A Permafrost Museum will be established at the permafrostnik site, reports “Interfax,” citing a statement from the city administration. Work to preserve Salehard’s permafrostnik, which spans over 500 square meters, and to reinforce its vaults began in 2021. The tunnels of the permafrostnik are being expanded to 3 meters in height and more than 2.5 meters in width. Additionally, the tunnel vaults will be adorned with illuminated ice crystals, and the arches will feature northern ornaments. The exhibition will include ice sculptures – figures of animals and characters from the mythology of indigenous peoples. An ice café will also be set up, where visitors can sit on furs near an ice fireplace. There are other permafrostniks in Yamalia: the world’s largest – the Novy Port permafrostnik, which is still in use and is a cultural heritage site; others exist in Gyda and Yamburg. In 2022, another Permafrost Museum was established in the permafrostnik in the settlement of Tazovsky.
