Date in the old style: June 21. On this day, the Orthodox Church commemorates the memory of the holy martyr Julian of Tarsus. He suffered for his faith in Antioch under Emperor Maximilian. The relics of the martyr later became known for the miracles that occurred near them.
The Russian people created proverbs about Ulyana (Julian) and about the unfulfilled meeting remembered on this day: "Ulyana calls Ulyan and Ulyan calls Ulyana"; "Ulyan does not look Ulyana in the face". The legend was told: "In ancient times, Ulyan wandered through meadows and fields, calling for his Ulyana, while Ulyana sat by the river, lost in contemplation of the running water. Only by evening did she come to her senses, ran to the meadow — but Ulyan had already gone to the river by another path. Thus, Ulyan and Ulyana never met."
On Ulyanov Day, it was customary to gather linden flowers, which were in bloom at this time. The people had many superstitions associated with this tree. For example, the linden was believed to have the ability to protect a person from the evil eye. It was also said that whoever cuts down a linden tree would surely get lost in the forest. And if the linden tree near the house suddenly dried up — it foretold bad changes in the family.
The linden was revered for good reason — its flowers have medicinal properties, being diuretic, febrifuge, expectorant, and bactericidal. In folk medicine, linden flowers have long been considered a reliable remedy for colds, coughs, and headaches. Powder from the leaves and seeds of this tree can stop bleeding and heal burns. Russian girls used linden also for cosmetic purposes: its juice strengthens hair, and the flower infusion gives the skin freshness.
