The Deputy Chairman of the Council, Deputy Head of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Russia, and Mufti of Moscow, Ildar Alyautdinov, announced that religious polygamy is now permitted in Russia. According to him, a man can enter into up to four religious marriages, provided he ensures fair and equal treatment of all his wives. Alyautdinov noted that a Muslim can remarry "religiously" if his wife cannot have children for various reasons or if there is sexual incompatibility. The Mufti also stated that a man may marry again if his wife refuses to have children.
