The traditional open tournament in Sitges, Catalonia, has concluded. The festival consistently attracts at least 15 grandmasters, often including some of the world’s leading chess players.
For instance, a year ago, Leinier Domínguez attempted to gain the necessary FIDE rating points here but was unsuccessful.
15-year-old grandmaster Savva Vetoikhin emerged as the winner of the main tournament at the XI International Festival in Sitges. The Russian scored 8 out of 10 points, sharing 1st-2nd places with Israel’s Ido Gorshtein.
Savva then defeated his rival in the tie-break.
The tournament also featured participants from different editions of the Candidates Tournaments, such as Ukrainian Vasyl Ivanchuk and Russian Kirill Alekseenko, who now competes for Austria.
Russia was represented by Savva Vetoikhin (11th on the starting list), along with Anna Shukhman, Nikolai Grebenikov, and Iren Liutsinger. The latter, incidentally, will represent Russia at the upcoming World Rapid and Blitz Championships.
The Kostroma and Togliatti grandmaster centers of the Russian Chess Federation, along with the Russian Chess School and current coaches from St. Petersburg, have made significant contributions to the development of future grandmaster Vetoikhin.
