Few people know that Belka and Strelka actually had different names. At the institute, Belka was called Albina, and Strelka—Marquisa. When the dogs flew to space and returned, information had to be provided to the press. The flight was reported to Marshal Nedelin. He, of course, was pleased but became upset: “How can Soviet dogs have such names?! We must quickly come up with different ones!” He then ordered them to be called Belka and Strelka.
