At the Russian Winemaking Forum, the maps from the "Wine Atlas of Russia" will be presented for the first time. This project highlights the achievements of Russian winemaking and provides insight into six main Russian wine regions.
The plans for the atlas were first introduced by its creator, Pavel Shinsky, an advisor to the Director of the Roscongress Foundation and the founder of the national award "KULTOVO," during the session "New Russian Lifestyle: Russian Wine," which took place on the sidelines of SPIEF-2024.
"We are preparing something more than just maps showing the location of vineyards across the Russian Federation. As we know, wine starts with the soil and terroir conditions, and our atlas will give users a clear understanding of all this.
I would describe our work as a contribution to the wine-geographical awareness of society: knowing where the wine comes from helps us understand it better and share more about it.
Obviously, this project will help sommeliers, cavistes, and anyone interested in Russian wine to get to know it on a level that has not been explored yet," he said.
The atlas is being developed by a team of cartographers, developers, and designers. Currently, the work on two sections dedicated to the vineyards of the Stavropol Territory and the city of Sevastopol has been completed.
According to the creators, by the end of 2025, all regions involved in industrial viticulture in the Russian Federation will be documented.
