Russian Railways (RZD) has created the first “Sapsan” train modernized to mark the 15th anniversary of Russia’s fastest passenger train, using exclusively domestically produced components for its interior, including seats and compartments. Each seat is now equipped with power outlets, the company told RIA Novosti. The “Sapsan” took its maiden voyage on December 17, 2009, running between Moscow and St. Petersburg. At the time and still today, it remains Russia's fastest train. However, this will change with the construction of a dedicated high-speed railway (HSR), where trains will reach even higher speeds. The train was named “Sapsan” after the fastest bird on the planet. Its speed record of 291 kilometers per hour was set during certification trials in 2009, conducted without passengers. The maximum operational speed with passengers is 250 kilometers per hour.
