The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has published the first list of Russians granted admission to the Games. They will be held from July 24 to August 11. The list includes 14 people: three cyclists, ten wrestlers, and one trampolinist. All will compete under neutral status. Additionally, applications from all Russian tennis players were approved. It is expected that 8 representatives from this sport will go to Paris. Among the wrestlers, the strongest Russian athletes - two-time Olympic champion Abdulrashid Sadulaev and Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Zaur Uguev - were not granted permission to participate in the Olympics. The President of the Russian Wrestling Federation, Mikhail Mamiashvili, called the Olympic committee’s list “a farce.” Furthermore, the IOC specifically noted that it denied all Russian taekwondo athletes, despite them having won four Olympic quotas. Back in December 2023, the Olympic committee allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in the Games, but only under neutral status (without anthem and national symbols) and under strict conditions. These include participation only by individual athletes (non-team sports) who have not expressed support for the special operation in Ukraine and who have no connections with the army or special services (including the sports clubs “Dynamo” and CSKA). In March this year, the IOC created a special commission (AINERP) to assess the eligibility of each Russian and Belarusian wishing to compete under neutral status. The commission is now gradually announcing the names of those who have been approved. Vladimir Putin has repeatedly emphasized that the IOC’s decisions regarding athletes from Russia are “ethnic discrimination.” According to him, the Olympic Games are being used as a tool of pressure against people who have no connection to politics.
