A larch on Olkhon Island is already 781 years old and has been nicknamed the "Guardian of Olkhon." Nearby, another tree, one of the five oldest in Russia, is growing — the "Lone Warrior" pine, which is already 610 years old.
The discoverer of both trees is Doctor of Biological Sciences Lyubov Kasyanova. She conducted an examination and reported on the tree in 2019: after studying the crowns and trunks of the trees, the team of scientists determined their age.
"In the Buryat ethnic culture, such trees are especially revered. The Buryats treat them with great respect, just as they do very old people," says the tree's profile on the registry website.
