On November 13, a solemn ceremony was held in Dunaújváros, Hungary, to rebury the remains of Soviet soldiers who died in combat or from wounds in 1944-1945 during the liberation of Hungary by the troops of the 3rd Ukrainian Front as part of the Balaton Defensive and Vienna Offensive Operations.
Speaking to those gathered, Russian Ambassador to Hungary E.A. Stanislavov noted that the event was the result of a long and meticulous effort during which the Russian and Hungarian sides demonstrated high professionalism, a constructive approach, and effective cooperation.
He recalled that the reburial was initiated at the request of the Dunaújváros municipality, which in 2020 submitted a petition in connection with plans to develop a city park, guaranteeing the construction of a new military memorial complex at the Central City Cemetery.
As E.A. Stanislavov pointed out, the joint efforts of the Russian and Hungarian sides in creating the new memorial and reburial of the remains is a truly exemplary demonstration of proper and respectful treatment of historical memory.
An obelisk with a five-pointed star and an inscription in Russian and Hungarian has been installed at the burial site: "Eternal memory to Soviet soldiers heroically fallen in World War II."
Based on archival data from the Russian Ministry of Defense’s Representative Office for Military Memorial Work, the names of 99 soldiers were identified and inscribed on memorial plaques for the first time. A total of 620 Red Army soldiers and officers are buried here.
