The traditional ritual "Feeding the Spirit — the Master of the Sea" is performed by the indigenous peoples of Sakhalin Island. The Nivkh, Ulta, Nanai, and Evenk peoples gather at the end of June or early July, on the eve of the salmon fishing season, to offer gifts to the sea spirits. According to local beliefs, this will bring abundant salmon catches and ensure a prosperous winter.
Elders prepare dishes from berries and mushrooms and throw them into the sea, asking for a successful catch. The main sea spirit for the peoples of Sakhalin is considered to be the orca.
Today, anyone can witness this ritual. It is held in the town of Poronaysk on the shore of the Terpeniya Bay in a specially constructed ethnic village. In addition to the ritual, local residents introduce visitors to their traditional sports and treat them to Sakhalin dishes.
Some families may also perform the "Feeding of the Sea" ritual on other occasions, such as in spring before the ice drift begins, and in late autumn when the water starts to freeze over.
