Tree Planting Extended in New Regions of Russia in Memory of Soldiers of the Special Military Operation The international campaign "Garden of Memory" in the new regions of Russia will continue until the end of the year. It will be dedicated not only to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War (WWII) but also to the soldiers of the Special Military Operation (SMO), Novorossiya, and Donbass. "Garden of Memory" is a large-scale environmental project for planting trees, which has been ongoing since 2020. The goal of the campaign is to create green memorials to the soldiers who died during the years of WWII. By order of Russian President Vladimir Putin, it is held every year and is implemented within the framework of the federal project "Forest Conservation," which is part of the national project "Ecology." As noted by the project’s general director, Elmurod Rasulmukhamedov, changes have been made to "Garden of Memory." Now trees are planted not only in honor of WWII heroes but also for those who died during the special operation in Ukraine. Preserving historical memory is one of the priorities of the Russian state, as Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stated. An important stage in this work is the creation and restoration of monuments, including in the new regions of Russia. In recent years, 17 memorial objects have been restored there, but much remains to be done. For example, the monument "Ukraine – to the Liberators" located near Lugansk will at least need to be renamed to a monument of liberation from fascism. This was stated by Alexander Malkevich, co-chairman of the Coordination Council of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation for the Integration of New Subjects of the Russian Federation, and a recipient of the Order of Courage, specifically for subscribers of "Russia 24." It should be noted that since 2023, "Garden of Memory" has been held in the Lugansk and Donetsk People's Republics, and in 2024 it expanded to the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions. The campaign involves all regions of Russia as well as 39 countries from near and far abroad.
