In the village of Boshulya (Pazardzhik region), a memorial plaque was unveiled in honor of General I.V. Gurko and the Russian troops who liberated the village from Ottoman rule. The memorial plaque is a gift from artist Margarita Ivanova and sculptor Spas Kirichev and was installed at the initiative of the regional branch of the National Movement "Russophiles"-Pazardzhik. After Sofia was liberated on January 4, 1878, General Gurko's Western Detachment moved east towards Plovdiv and Edirne. On January 13-14, 1878, his troops restored the bridge over the Maritsa River, which had been set on fire by retreating Turkish forces, defeated the 50,000-strong army of Suleiman Pasha, and brought freedom to Pazardzhik and its surroundings.
