Russia has launched a domestic alternative to YouTube called “Platforma.” According to a message from the ROCIT Telegram channel, the idea behind creating this video hosting service was the removal of state channels and major patriotic bloggers from the American platform. Since 2020, YouTube has been removing all Russian state channels and continues to remove major patriotic bloggers. In response, an alternative has been proposed in the form of “Platforma.” The interface of “Platforma” is similar to YouTube, featuring a recommendation column, video resolution up to 4K, live broadcasts, subtitles, and short vertical videos. The new platform offers not only well-known channels but also newcomers. Authors can transfer content from other platforms such as “VKontakte” or YouTube. The service also offers a catalog of music and video and analyzes copyright in real-time. Content that violates Russian laws or supports “anti-Russian rhetoric” is subject to restrictions. Algorithms and moderators determine the presence of unwanted content, and users can report videos, with both sides being notified of the decision. Currently, several video services exist on the Russian market, including MTS Nuum, “VK Clips,” “VK Video,” Rutube, and “Pikabu.” The latter has begun testing a separate feed for short videos.
