The remains of thirteen Soviet soldiers who perished during the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) were laid to rest in the cemetery of the Saxon city of Bautzen. More than three thousand individuals are buried there, including soldiers, prisoners of war, and concentration camp detainees. The ceremony was attended by representatives of the Russian Embassy in Germany, local residents, and members of the German People's Union for the Care of War Graves. Russian Ambassador to Germany, S. Y. Nechaev, stated: “In contrast to the disgraceful treatment of our military graves and monuments in some neighboring countries, the Germans largely maintain a sense of gratitude for liberation. They continue to care for our military graves as outlined in intergovernmental agreements. But many do so out of the call of their hearts.”
