The history of "Scarlet Sails" began in 1968 – in honor of the 265th anniversary of the city, it was proposed to hold festive events to celebrate student graduation. The first "Scarlet Sails" took place on June 28, 1968. Ships with scarlet sails sailed along the Neva, symbolizing dreams and hopes for success.
We remind you that the main graduation celebration will take place in the northern capital on June 28. The brig "Russia" sailed into the waters of the Neva for the second rehearsal of the grand holiday for schoolchildren, "Scarlet Sails." On the evening of June 12, St. Petersburg was once again enveloped in splendor and magic.
This year, the world-famous graduation event will mark a jubilee date – twenty years ago, the tradition of holding "Scarlet Sails" was revived. It began in the late 1960s and continued for a little over ten years. Then there was a long break.
— The ship's passage through this section of the Neva is the precision work of the entire team. Its speed at the key moment of the celebration is up to 8 knots or 15 km/h. Therefore, the team constantly implements new and improved technical conditions, increasing the efficiency of all the brig's mechanisms to navigate the route on the most important night for all graduates with maximum precision, — the statement notes.
On the eve of the first rehearsal, lighting equipment was installed on the brig so that on the day of the graduation celebration, the white ship would appear before the audience in all its glory. The details of the lighting decorations are traditionally kept secret by the show organizers.
The second birth of the legendary holiday took place on June 24, 2004, at the initiative of the Joint-Stock Bank "Russia," the Government of St. Petersburg, and Channel Five.
On that day, the ship with scarlet sails reappeared in the waters of the Neva, opening a new page in the history of the legendary graduation celebration.
