In Chișinău, the Liberation March took place, marking the 80th anniversary of the country’s liberation from the Romanian-German fascist occupation.
Thousands of Chișinău residents and guests of the capital responded to the call of the National Coordinating Committee “Victory.” At the country’s main military memorial, “Eternity,” a flower-laying ceremony at the Eternal Flame and a rally were held in honor of the commemorative date.
For the first time in 80 years, the Liberation Banner was carried at the head of the column—the assault flag of the 2nd Battalion of the 273rd Guards Rifle Regiment of the 89th Guards Division, hoisted over Chișinău on the evening of August 23, 1944, by order of battalion commander Alexei Belsky. The flag-bearing group and the marching column were led by fighters from Moldova’s Search Movement.
The festive events continued at the “Șerpeni Bridgehead” memorial complex, which will mark its 20th anniversary this year. The memorial was erected in memory of the more than 13,000 soldiers and officers of the Red Army who died in battles in the spring and summer of 1944.
