On December 12, Saint Paramon of Bithynia and 370 martyrs with him, as well as the priest-martyr Sergius Kochyurov, are commemorated.
In Russia, this day was called "Paramon," "Paramon's Day," "Paramon the Winter Guide," or "Paramon the Star-Seer." It was believed that the weather on this day foretold the weather for the entire upcoming winter.
Who Was Saint Paramon?
This saint and his 370 companions were martyred. The event took place in the year 250 AD during the reign of Emperor Decius. At that time, Avian, the governor of the eastern territories acting on behalf of the pagan emperor, ordered 370 Christians to be imprisoned. He demanded they offer sacrifices at a pagan temple, promising them freedom in return. Paramon was the first to declare that he would never do such a thing. As a result, he was executed. Encouraged by Paramon’s example, the other prisoners also refused one by one and were all martyred.
