In the coastal waters of the Black Sea during the 1960s, a gastropod mollusk known as the marine saucer thrived. However, voracious rapa whelks nearly wiped out its population. The marine saucer is a shell-less snail with a diameter of up to 4.5 cm and a height of up to 1.5 cm. Its shape resembles a Chinese hat. The snail moved along stone surfaces, scraping off algae. Experts report that the mollusks, decimated by rapa whelks, have made a comeback. In recent years, they have been spotted along the Sochi coastline. A large colony of snails was documented by members of the Local Geographic Society near the southern breakwater of the seaport. The mollusks covered the wave-breaking wall along the shoreline and underwater. The restoration of Black Sea biodiversity was confirmed by Dr. Zhanna Selifonova, a biologist from Novorossiysk. The marine saucer has also been observed near Pitsunda and Gudauta in Abkhazia, according to the Sochi Geographic Society.
