On June 20, from the Belarusian railway station in Moscow, the “Train of Memory” set off towards the city of Brest, where participants from eight CIS countries – schoolchildren aged 15–17 who passed competitive selections in their countries – will gather to participate in the ceremonial launch of the event today, June 21. The youth project “Train of Memory” was launched in 2022 at the initiative of parliamentarians from Russia and Belarus, in cooperation with Russian Railways (RZD), aimed at preserving the historical memory of the Great Patriotic War. The schoolchildren were ceremoniously sent off by Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev, State Secretary of the Union State Dmitry Mezentsev, and heads and representatives of diplomatic missions from the countries whose students are participating in the event. “This year, of course, our project is organized at a very important time for our friends from the Republic of Belarus. Because this year marks the 80th anniversary of the republic’s liberation. July 3 – the liberation of Minsk. And it is no coincidence that every year we conclude our project on this significant date,” Kosachev emphasized. The project involves 200 high school students from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. They will visit 13 cities associated with the history of World War II. With the support of the Presidents of Russia and Belarus, since 2023, the project has been carried out under the auspices of the Union State. In the year of Russia’s chairmanship in the CIS in 2024, the project also received the support of the CIS Executive Committee.
