On October 30, 2024, people remember the Prophet Hosea, who lived in the kingdom of Israel. In folk tradition, this day was known as Hosea the Wheelwright Day, as it was a day for repairing wheels and replacing them with sled runners. People used to say, "On Prophet Hosea’s Day, the wheel bids farewell to the axle until spring." This day marked the final transition between the seasons.
The future prophet Hosea lived in the 8th century BC in the kingdom of Israel. He was the son of Beeri and descended from the tribe of Issachar. He was a contemporary of other prophets — Isaiah, Micah, and Amos. Hosea fervently praised God and sought to bring his people back to the true faith, steering them away from paganism. He also fearlessly condemned the immorality of the Israelites, foretelling great calamities for them as a result. Nearly a thousand years before the coming of the Savior, he predicted many changes that would come with His arrival. Many of Hosea’s prophecies are included in the Holy Scriptures.
His personal life was quite dramatic. His wife was unfaithful, eventually abandoning him. Afterward, he took in two wayward women, demonstrating that any sin could be forgiven. He gave the children born to them unusual names. The boy was named Lo-Ammi, meaning "not my people," and the girl was named Lo-Ruhamah, meaning "not shown mercy." The prophet passed away in old age, having served God for over 60 years.
