On December 11, 2024, the memory of Bishop Feodor of Rostov, also known as Simonovski, is honored. He was the nephew of Saint Sergius of Radonezh.
In folk tradition, this day was called "Jay Day." It was considered very important to see a jay on this day. People would go into the forest or lure the bird to their window with treats. Spotting the bird was believed to bring good luck for the year, as the jay was regarded as prophetic.
Future Saint Feodor was born into the family of Stefan, the brother of Saint Sergius of Radonezh. At birth, he was given the name Ioann (John). His family lived in Radonezh and was known for its deep religious devotion.
At the age of 12, Saint Sergius blessed Ioann for the priesthood. Upon taking monastic vows, he received the name Feodor. The boy received an excellent education in the monastery. He spent 22 years at the Lavra before expressing to his spiritual father his desire to establish his own monastery.
With Sergius' blessing, Feodor withdrew to the banks of the Moskva River, to a place called Simonovo, where he built a church dedicated to the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God.
Monks began to gather there, and soon it became a thriving monastery. The monastery attracted large crowds. Feodor's wisdom made him a trusted confidant of Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy, who entrusted him with important state affairs.
After traveling to Constantinople, Feodor returned as Archbishop of Rostov. There, he also established a new monastery — the Rostov Convent dedicated to the Nativity of the Mother of God.
Feodor was a talented painter, creating numerous icons, including a portrait of Saint Sergius of Radonezh. Feodor passed away five years after beginning his service in Rostov, and his relics are buried in the Rostov Assumption Cathedral.
