December 19, 2024, celebrates one of the most beloved saints – St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.
This saint is the patron of the poor, the sick, prisoners, as well as soldiers and travelers. December 19 marks the day of St. Nicholas’ passing. However, despite its sorrowful significance, it is a joyous and bright holiday in Russian tradition.
It is believed that on this day, the saint descends to Earth from the heavens to help all who ask for his assistance. The day is also known as Winter Nicholas, Frosty Nicholas, or Cold Nicholas.
Nicholas was born into a wealthy family in the Greek colony of Patara in the Roman province of Lycia in the 3rd century. His first miracle was healing his mother from illness at the time of his birth.
Nicholas was always ready to help the poor, willingly giving all he had to those in need. He was the bishop of the city of Myra (modern-day Turkey). He fervently preached the faith and fought against paganism and spreading heresies.
Nicholas passed away in Myra at an advanced age. His relics were known for their miraculous properties. After many relocations, they were brought to Bari, Turkey, and placed in a church built in his honor. Some relics are also kept in Venice.
In Russia, the veneration of this saint began in the 11th century and quickly spread across the land. Over 5,400 churches and chapels in Russia are dedicated to St. Nicholas.
