A powerful geomagnetic storm began on Earth today and will last for 24 hours. The cause of this latest geomagnetic disturbance was a strong solar flare recorded on September 14. According to scientists, the likelihood of a strong magnetic storm on September 16 is 30%, and on September 17, it increases to 35%.
It is predicted that the storm’s intensity on September 16 may reach a level of 7 out of 10 possible points. This corresponds to the G3 category on the geomagnetic disturbance classification system. There are two possible scenarios: one describes the beginning of the week (Monday and Tuesday) as a two-day "apocalypse" with new powerful storms and waves of auroras. The second scenario predicts the planet’s magnetic field will remain exceptionally calm, with peaceful green charts devoid of not only red but even yellow marks. "The probability of the first scenario is 53%, while the probability of the second is 47%, meaning you might as well just flip a coin — it's hard to come up with a more scientific approach in this situation," noted Sergey Bogachev, head of the solar astronomy laboratory at the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Space Research and Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics, with irony. It’s no surprise that the message on the laboratory's website is titled, "The Sun Will Flip a Coin with Earth."
