Beauty will save the world. This principle is followed by Valentina Lavrishcheva, the founder of the company "Part of a Person." She turned her uniqueness into strength, and her desire to find a beautiful and reliable product led her to create it herself – she started her own business to design innovative hand prosthetics.
Valentina is an entrepreneur from Bryansk. Together with her husband, Alexei Gubanov, she founded the project "Part of a Person," where prosthetics are created to individual sizes. The fingers in the hand move where they are supposed to move; the joints are placed where the joints in the hand usually bend.
We talked to Valentina and learned how she managed to create an innovative product, who inspires prosthetic design engineers, and what is most important in their work. The company was formed thanks to a family union. They met in a company developing bionic prosthetics. Alexei worked as a design engineer, and Valentina was a test pilot for bionic hand prosthetics. Valentina was looking for a cosmetic hand prosthesis, not a bionic one, as she needed it at that moment. Alexei himself made her a very beautiful hand.
Valentina became the first user of the prosthesis in their project. But the attachment of that first prosthesis was extremely uncomfortable and broke very quickly. Nevertheless, the prosthesis was so beautiful that they decided to continue. "If I want such a prosthesis myself, I am sure that other people will want one too," said Valentina.
We don't have advanced marketing; people come through word of mouth: they hear about us, see the new invention – we are now patenting it. It is a completely new product on the prosthetic market, created considering what Valentina herself lacked. We stand for beauty – the best-emphasized feature. And I probably want to leave such impressions on people: to be seen as a strong person, without a drop of regret or pity.
The capital is an activator of such opportunities, but they are gradually spreading throughout Russia to smaller cities. Various communities and active events are missing here. When we organize meetings with our users, we notice a kind of kinship – we have all gone through similar stages in life and treat each other warmly. Now, our clients participate in various fashion shows, engage in sports, including snowboarding, swimming, and diving.
Beautiful prosthetics bring good mood. And the mood affects the entire life. What is special about your project? It is a new approach, a new look at technical rehabilitation aids. Prosthetics can be beautiful, stylish; it is primarily a stylish accessory. Our first product is a mirror copy of the other hand. This symmetry is very important. We have preserved the shape and geometry of the hand. When I put on our first prototype hand, I saw the shape of my nails, finger pads, knuckles – my brain was a bit shocked because I had never touched my left hand. But now I am touching my fingers, and it is so pleasant, beautiful, and nice. We pay attention to design and tactile sensations. We don't just hand over the prosthesis and forget about the person; we organize photo sessions, tell about the opportunities available.
Some of our clients have participated in fashion shows, some have been invited to act in movies – we inform our users about this, trying to make the person feel beautiful, important, needed. Why do you love your job? I don't always love my job. Sometimes it is very difficult, and I want to give up everything. But when we deliver a prosthesis, sometimes it is so touching that it brings tears. You see how happy the person is, how they have long wanted something exactly like this. It is so touching that you realize you are not working in vain. We often hear that we are doing something important, but we don't feel it in the process – we understand it when we hand over the prosthesis and organize a photo session. When a person sees themselves in a beautiful location, in beautiful clothes, possibly with makeup, with a new prosthesis – they feel regal, and this change is visible. It is so beautiful that you think: "Did I contribute to this?". Probably, that is why I love my job.
