Stewardesses of “Aeroflot” — the only Soviet airline — were always dressed in the latest fashion as they represented the country’s image. The first mandatory uniform appeared in 1954 for international flights. It was designed by artists from the All-Union House of Models in Moscow. The women wore dark blue woolen suits with felt hats, coats, shoes, and gloves. The men had suits similar to the pilots’ uniforms. In 1962, a light gray summer suit was added to the blue uniform. From 1968, it was complemented with a pillbox hat — a very fashionable accessory. The 1970s were the brightest. A raspberry-colored uniform with gold buttons was created for the stewardesses. During service, they also wore blue aprons with patterns in Russian folk style. Then came the “Aeroflot” dress uniform – blue with a wide white trim. When turtlenecks became fashionable, they replaced the strict white shirts. The last set of Soviet uniforms was introduced in 1986. The winter version included red hats and scarves, and the summer version – sky-blue dresses.
