The first cyberpsychology department has been established in Russia at Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod (UNN). As reported by "Izvestia," graduates of this department will become specialists who combine skills in psychology, neuroscience, and information technology.
During their education, they will participate in the development of new IT solutions related to psychology. For example, they will study devices for diagnosing the condition of esports athletes, stress detectors for professionals ranging from machine operators to remote workers, and smart clothing with data on employees' condition during their shifts.
"Cyberpsychology is currently evolving into an independent scientific field, and we are pioneers in this area. UNN has a cyberpsychology laboratory, a master's program, and the first textbook is being prepared. Thanks to the department, young scientists will be able to participate in research and develop their own projects already at the bachelor's level," said Valeria Demareva, head of the cyberpsychology laboratory at the Faculty of Social Sciences at UNN.
The cyberpsychology laboratory at the university has been operating for several years, and it mainly admits adult working individuals (representatives of psychology, IT, design, marketing) who need new competencies to solve tasks arising in their professional activities. For example, one of the projects aims to create a drowsiness detector based on heart rate.
Additionally, the university studies people's states when they play video games, which can be applied both in game development and in training esports teams.
Cyberpsychology is a relatively new field that studies the interaction between humans and technology in virtual environments. Within its framework, topics such as the internet's influence on people's mental health, their behavior in social networks, cyberbullying, video games, virtual and augmented reality are studied.
"Today, cyberpsychology applies various research methods, including surveys, experiments, observation, and analysis of big data. One of the important aspects is studying the influence of technology on people's mental health," noted the expert.
Future graduates of the new department's program will also be able to find themselves not only in psychology but also in IT companies, developing new tools to facilitate society's interaction in cyberspace.
