St. Petersburg to host Icebreaker Festival
The icebreaker festival will be held in St. Petersburg from May 30 to June 2, 2024, and will be part of the city’s day celebration, reports TASS. "Given the significant importance, the anniversary icebreaker festival has been included in the city's event plan dedicated to City Day - the founding day of St. Petersburg.
Nuclear icebreakers of the "Arktika" class are used to escort cargo and other ships along the Northern Sea Route. This route includes the Barents Sea, Pechora Sea, Kara Sea, East Siberian Sea, Laptev Sea, and Bering Strait. The main ports along this route are Dikson, Tiksi, and Pevek.
The icebreakers "Captain Sorokin," "Captain Kosolapov," and "Murmansk" from FGU "Rosmorport" will participate in the annual event - the Icebreaker Festival, which will be held for the tenth time in St. Petersburg, according to the company's press service.
The festival will begin on Thursday, May 30, and will continue daily from 12:00 to 18:00, concluding on Sunday, June 2. Visitors will be able to board the icebreakers and learn about the unique engineering constructions of the ships and life on board. A highlight of the festival will be the traditional tugboat waltz on the Neva - during this unique "dance," the tugboats will rotate synchronously, releasing powerful water fountains.
Guests will see 4 icebreakers, three of which are operational. Tours of the ships will be free.
