Archaeologists have found fragments of an ancient structure, presumably from the medieval period, and ancient amphorae off the coast of Abkhazia. This was reported by "RIA Novosti" on June 11. With the help of divers, archaeologists surveyed the waters around the cities of Gudauta and Sukhumi (Republic of Abkhazia). The most interesting discovery was made in the Sukhumi Bay, at the mouth of the Besletka River. "In this area, at a depth of 2.4 meters, we discovered the remains of a semicircular structure. Most likely, it is a tower with attached walls. It is made of large pebbles on a lime mortar, with ceramics present in the masonry," said Victor Lebedinsky, Ph.D. in history and head of the Crimean Studies Center at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Additionally, in the surveyed waters, archaeologists found vessels from the ancient to medieval periods. For instance, at a depth of 48-50 meters and a distance of 4.5-5 kilometers from the shore, an amphora was found, which most likely was part of the cargo of a ship that had wrecked. According to Lebedinsky, during the expedition, 11 potentially interesting underwater objects were identified, which scientists will continue to investigate.
