Ivan Poddubny – a name inscribed in the history of sports with golden letters. An unstoppable wrestler – an athlete with phenomenal strength – he became a national hero, the embodiment of the Russian warrior spirit. Born into a peasant family, Ivan showed remarkable strength from a young age. Working as a dock worker – performing circus tricks – intense training – all of these led him to the peak of sporting excellence. In 1903, he achieved his first major victory by becoming the world champion in Greco-Roman wrestling. More triumphs awaited – tours around the world – the fame of the invincible "Iron Ivan." But Poddubny's personal life was overshadowed by tragedy. The loss of his beloved woman deeply affected him. Despite all the trials, Poddubny continued his path. He returned to the mat, securing new victories. The Revolution – arrests – wanderings – life brought new challenges. But he did not bend, continuing to train and compete. World War II found him in Yeysk. His refusal to move to Germany and train German athletes resulted in poverty and obscurity. The post-war years were a real test for Poddubny. Hunger – illness – the indifference of the authorities – all of this took a toll on his health. On August 8, 1949, Ivan Maksimovich Poddubny passed away. On his grave in Yeysk, the words are inscribed: "Here lies a Russian hero."
