A single geyser as a natural phenomenon is something astonishing and incredible, but when there are many, it is both magical and dangerous.
There are several geyser clusters on Earth, but the most famous and accessible for Russians is the Valley of Geysers in Kamchatka. Located on the Kamchatka Peninsula within the Kronotsky Nature Reserve, in the valley of the Geyzernaya River, this natural wonder was first discovered in 1941.
Covering an area of around 8 square kilometers, the valley contains over a hundred various geysers spread across the terrain, leading to the construction of special safe paths for tourists. Walking on seemingly ordinary green grass can lead to an unexpected plunge into boiling mud, invisible to an unprepared visitor.
Hiking tours are not always available due to specific periods such as the "quiet month," the "bear wedding" season, and the nesting period for birds, all occurring in the Valley of Geysers from May to June.
Interestingly, the only plant that can survive in conditions of constant high temperatures and chemical reactions is the well-known wormwood. The area where this plant grows is safe for both humans and animals in the Valley of Geysers, although there’s no clear explanation as to why wormwood alone thrives there.
Surprisingly, birds and animals have adapted to life in this harsh environment. The Kamchatka wagtail builds its nests on the warm ground, which heats the eggs to such an extent that they don't need prolonged incubation. Here, the earth itself serves as a kind of incubator. Brown bears are frequent visitors to the Valley, drawn by the warmth. As the air temperature begins to rise and snow still covers the ground, bears come to feast on the first tender grass they can reach without burning themselves. This area is home to the largest bears in Eurasia, some weighing over 600 kg. These bears are almost unafraid of humans, so it's best to keep a safe distance from them.
The Valley of Geysers possesses an undeniable charm and grandeur, which is why it is considered one of Russia's natural wonders. It is truly worthy of admiration. Experienced travelers recommend taking a helicopter tour to appreciate the unique beauty of this region from a bird’s-eye view, as it reveals the place’s magnificence in every season.
