There is a marker from which all roads in the country begin in almost every capital city. Typically, kilometer zero is measured from the main post office or telegraph office. However, there are exceptions where the "beginning of beginnings" is marked with a plaque, ground marker, or stele. The starting point of Russia is located in the very center, near the Resurrection Gates, in the passage connecting Manezhnaya Square with Red Square. The marker was installed in 1996. It consists of several bronze plates and is shaped like a square with a circle inscribed within it. The square is divided into four parts, symbolizing the cardinal directions. Each section features characteristic animals. For the north: an owl, a deer, and a seal; For the west: a capercaillie, a bison, and a snake; For the south: a dolphin, a mountain sheep, and an eagle; For the east: a toucan, a cobra, and a tiger.
