Mednoe Lake is located on the Karelian Isthmus in the Vsevolozhsky District of the Leningrad Region. It was artificially created in the 18th century during the construction of the Sestroretsk weapons factories. In the Finnish Ingrian village of Vaskisavotta, on the dammed Chyornaya River, copper rolling and iron rolling mills were established. The village was named Copper Factory, and the man-made lake became known as Mednoe Lake or Mednozavodskii Reservoir.
The production existed here for a short time; the factory closed in the second half of the 19th century, but the settlement and the lake have survived to this day. Today, Mednoe Lake is surrounded by gardening associations and cottage settlements.
On the picturesque shores of the Mednozavodskii Reservoir, not only residents and vacationers from the nearby Sertolovo district and cottage settlements come to relax, swim, and fish, but also people from St. Petersburg. The surroundings of Mednoe Lake are rich in forest gifts. Mushroom pickers come to the local forests for record harvests of white mushrooms, and wild berry lovers come for blueberries. The shores of the Mednozavodskii Reservoir are not deserted in winter either. People come here to ski through the snow-covered coniferous forest, ride snowmobiles, or try their luck at ice fishing.
Most of the man-made Mednoe Lake is shallow; depths sufficient for fishing are found only in the channel part of the Chyornaya River. The main catch, as in the neighboring Sarzhenskoe Lake and other small bodies of water on the Karelian Isthmus, is represented by perch, roach, and ruffe. In recent years, the American catfish has adapted and begun to reproduce in the local waters, and occasionally pike is caught.
The water in the lake has an unusual color. Although it is clean and transparent, it has a distinct reddish-brown hue. This color is caused by the composition of the bog waters that feed the body of water, rich in organic and ferruginous compounds.
