Neya is a small, cozy town in the Kostroma region with a population of just about 10,000 people. But despite its size, there’s plenty to explore! Here’s what you shouldn’t miss:
Astashovo Forest Mansion This museum-hotel in the Kostroma region was built in 1897. The intricately carved wooden dacha was once abandoned and overgrown by the forest but has been restored using historical techniques and materials to bring back its original look. The interior features peasant household items and furniture found in abandoned villages.
Dog Sledding Races Yes, you heard right! Neya hosts the legendary "Northern Hope" dog sledding races. Mushers come from around the world: the USA, Canada, Belgium, and even the Netherlands. It’s truly a must-see event!
Pokrovskaya Water Tower Strolling through Neya, you’ll come across wooden buildings from the early 20th century that are protected as architectural monuments. For example, the Water Tower, built at the beginning of the 20th century, is a regionally protected landmark. Don’t miss the many churches in Neya, either.
Don’t Leave Without Souvenirs! Birch bark crafts are a local treasure here. You’ll find salt shakers, decorative samovars, dishes, breadbaskets, and boxes that will remind you of your trip.
