On September 26 (October 8), 1889, 135 years ago, the king of silent cinema, Ivan Mozzhukhin, was born.
Mozzhukhin is known for the versatility of his talent: he did not have a specific typecast and could play a variety of characters. The actor paid great attention to facial expressions and gestures, which allowed him to subtly and accurately convey the emotional experiences of the characters without words.
Ivan worked with directors such as Yakov Protazanov, Yevgeny Bauer, Pyotr Chardynin, and others. Many memories of Mozzhukhin were recorded by Alexander Vertinsky in the book “Along the Long Road.”
We have compiled a selection of photos of the actor in various roles:
• Hermann in the film The Queen of Spades (1916)
• Father Sergius in the film of the same name (1918)
• Kean in Kean or Genius and Disorder (1922)
• Detective Z in The Burning Bonfire (1923)
• Casanova in the film of the same name (1927)
• Hadji-Murat in The White Devil (1930)
Radio Fontanny Dom dedicated an episode of the “Silver Age Cinema” podcast to Ivan Mozzhukhin.
