On November 14, 2024, Orthodox Christians celebrate the day of the unmercenary saints Cosmas and Damian, who are known in Russia as Kuzma and Demyan. In popular tradition, this day is also called Kuzminki and is considered a women’s day in Orthodox practice. On this day, it was customary in Russia for unmarried girls to prepare a grand and delicious meal for the whole family.
The brothers Damian and Cosmas lived in Rome in the 3rd century. When they were not yet 10 years old, their father suddenly passed away from an incurable and unknown illness. Their mother devoted herself to raising them, and the brothers pledged to help others. As they grew older, they became doctors, receiving the gift of healing from God, and treated everyone who came to them free of charge. Their “payment” was a request to believe in the God by whose power they healed illnesses. They never accepted money or gifts from patients. However, one woman managed to persuade them to take a basket of eggs, after which this day became traditionally considered a women’s day in Orthodoxy.
