This is the world's first large-scale monument made of titanium. The height of the monument is 42.5 meters. It is located on the square of the same name and is its dominant feature. The location was not chosen by chance — it was along Leninsky Prospekt that Yuri Gagarin, having completed his historic flight, traveled from Vnukovo Airport to the Kremlin on April 14, 1961.
Over the years, the monument has suffered numerous damages, but specialists have restored everything. The stylobate was cleaned of dirt and paint stains, the damaged facing blocks and slabs were replaced, and the stones were treated with wax. The monument itself was also cleaned of dirt and corrosion, and all the titanium plates were washed. Work was carried out not only on the exterior but also inside — within a space with a diameter of one meter.
At the final stage, a restored model of the descent module of the "Vostok" spacecraft was installed on the stylobate.
Now, the transformed monument to the cosmonaut who opened humanity's path to the stars will once again delight Muscovites and city visitors with its beauty and grandeur.
