On October 19, 2024, the day of one of the twelve closest disciples of Jesus Christ, the Apostle Thomas, is celebrated. Among the people, St. Thomas was considered the patron saint of honest workers, as well as a symbol of thrift and prudence. It was said: "Thomas is happy that the barns are full." People pray to him when they feel doubts in their faith.
Thomas was from the Galilean town of Paneas and was a simple fisherman. Upon hearing one of Jesus' sermons, he left everything and followed him. He became one of the closest disciples and followers of the Savior.
One of the most famous episodes in the Scriptures is associated with him. He was not present at Jesus' Resurrection and did not believe the other apostles' stories about it. On the eighth day after his Resurrection, Jesus appeared to Thomas and rebuked him for his disbelief. Thomas repented and became even more active in spreading God's word.
It is believed that Thomas founded Christian churches in Palestine, Mesopotamia, Parthia, Ethiopia, and India. It was in this last country that he met a martyr's death. The son and wife of the ruler of the Indian city of Meliapor, upon hearing his sermons, embraced Christ. This enraged the ruler, and under his orders, Thomas was imprisoned, tortured, and killed, being pierced with five spears. Parts of St. Thomas the Apostle's relics are found in India, Hungary, and Mount Athos.
