The Sri Lankan authorities have begun large-scale inspections of the legality of foreign nationals' stay in the island nation. Cases of detaining Russian citizens who have severely violated the Republic’s immigration laws have already been recorded. For example, on October 25 of this year, a Russian family was arrested in the Kandy area, having stayed in Sri Lanka illegally for almost a year. In this regard, the Embassy urges all Russian citizens in Sri Lanka to check their documents confirming the legality of their stay on the island (visas and their extensions, work permits, etc.). If these documents have expired, please promptly contact Sri Lankan immigration authorities to resolve the matter and inform the Embassy about the issue.
