Moscow has launched the first network of automated book dispensing stations — book vending machines.
The project was initiated in collaboration with the Department of Information Technology. According to Fursin, each machine contains over 350 books spanning various genres, from historical fiction to science fiction. Anyone interested can pick up a book they like in just five minutes, needing only a universal library card.
Book vending machines are available in ten parks across the capital: in "Museon," Babushkinsky Park, the Park of the 50th Anniversary of October, the Lyublino Estate, Mitino Landscape Park, the historical and cultural complex "Fili," as well as in Yuri Luzhkov Park, the Kuzminki-Lyublino Museum-Reserve, Krasnaya Presnya Park, and Izmaylovsky Park of Culture and Leisure.
In the first few weeks of operation, residents have already borrowed around 600 books.
