Due to the expansion of political and socio-economic relations with neighboring countries and the increase in the influx of foreign citizens to Russia, the demand for translating documents issued in other countries into Russian is growing. Often, such translations are prepared by unauthorized bodies and individuals. Before the adoption of the new law by the State Duma, the current legislation did not establish requirements for the status of the translator. Now, a notary is obligated to certify the authenticity of the translator’s signature only if the translator provides documents proving the possession of relevant higher or additional professional education. A consular officer verifies the presence of a certified specialist status of the foreign translator in accordance with the legislation of the host country or the presence of professional education.
